Who is God? In one way or another everyone asks this question at some point–everyone. And the answer determines everything. For if God is real and everything comes from Him, then everything finds its purpose and fulfillment in Him.
But the Father did not determine that everything should come just from Him, but more specifically that it should come through Jesus Christ. Everything that has been created, whether in heaven or on earth, was created through Jesus…and everything was created for Him (Colossians 1:16).
As I have said before, you will never know who you are until you know who the Father is. But you will never know who the Father is until you walk in the identity of the Son. That’s because Jesus Christ is the image of God (Colossians 1:15). The Father, in all His fullness, was pleased to live in Christ (Colossians 1:19). And so it is as Jesus said, if we have seen Him, then we have seen the Father. If we know Him, we will know the Father (John 14:7,9).
You see, Jesus is the revelation of God because He Himself is completely God. Yet because of His love for the Father and for us, Jesus emptied Himself of His divine privileges and took on the position of a slave and was born as a human being (Philippians 2:6-7). But His love didn’t end there. He also lived as a human being in such obedience and devotion to the Father that everything He said and did revealed exactly who God is.
The thing I want you to understand is this: In Jesus Christ there is no separation or distinction between God and Man. He is the fullness of God, and at the same time fully human. The beautiful thing is that this was the Father’s purpose all along. So that those who come to the Father through uniting themselves with the Son, would themselves become sons and daughters–children who are fully human, yet filled with the fullness of God (Ephesians 1:3-5; 1 Corinthians 2:9-12).
It has always been the Father’s desire to reveal Himself to us–to show us the greatness of His glory and love. But this would have been impossible had it not been for Jesus. No one has ever seen (understood) God. But the unique One (Jesus), who is Himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us (John 1:18).
So here’s the thing: The answer to every question about who the Father is, is found in Jesus Christ…and the answer to every question about who we are is found in Him also. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Him (Colossians 2:9-10).
